- Workshop Description
- Instructor Information
 | Painting on paper with colored pulps is one of Tom Balbo's specialties. Join us at the Morgan to create a small body of work using these techniques. Students will start with a fresh sheet of handmade paper and paint with specially prepared pulps. In this workshop they will learn how a variety of fibers are prepared, colored, and applied. Different application techniques will be discussed and demonstrated ranging from freehand to the use of stencils. The synthesis of substrate, medium, and image is a unique characteristic of the pulp painting medium, allowing students to work not merely on, but in paper. |

| Origami | Tuition: $65.00 Materials fee: $15.00 |
|
- Workshop Description
- Instructor Information
 | This basic origami workshop will introduce modular pieces varying in difficulty that can be mastered by anyone with just a bit of patience. Students will start with a simple square flat unit cube box that is fun and useful followed by three other models that will be mastered by the class participants. Upon completion students will have a grasp on the basic techniques necessary to proceed with their own exploration of the art of origami. |
Monica is a graduate of Ohio State University and started doing origami when she was a young girl. She continued to fold origami through adolescence but it was shelved, as frequently happens, when she went to college. During that time Monica studied painting and drawing as well as a number of other art forms, including ceramics, sculpture and metal casting. Later, just by chance, she came across a web site featuring photographs of wonderful modular origami and her interest in origami was reawakened. She began folding immediately and started looking for other folders. Eager to connect with other folders she tried for more than a year to find a group or class but without success. Finally she decided to start her own origami group, Capital Area Paper Shapers.

 | How do you make an artist’s book? In this class we will use an intuitive approach, employing multiple ways to create rich, colored images and the possibility of incorporating text. Unique codex books with painted pages will be created with an emphasis on intuition and the hand, rather than computer generated imagery. Drawing inspiration from paste paper techniques, we will create painted or decorated pages and enhance them with simple printmaking methods like Mylar stencils, stamps, and pochoir as well as free form handwriting. We will bind the pages together in a drum leaf binding, an excellent structure for artists that can be made without the use of expensive equipment. Covers will be painted in order to include them as an integral part of the process. Our ultimate goal will be the creation of a unique work of art in book form. |
Laura Wait lives in Colorado and makes unique books and small editions using painting and printmaking techniques. With certificates in Printmaking and in Bookbinding from Croydon College of Art, England, her 25 years experience as a bookbinder and conservator is the basis for her excellent bookbinding technique in the English tradition, including leather fine bindings and medieval-style wooden board bindings. An active painter and printmaker, she exhibits her art widely, and her books are in many private and public collections, including the Library of Congress. She teaches book art workshops throughout the country.

| | Strength, beauty, and translucency are characteristics of Asian-style papers. They lend themselves readily to applications from printing to drawing, book arts to sculpture. This course will offer an in-depth investigation in all aspects of Asian papermaking, including fiber selection, cooking, picking, beating, sheet-forming, pressing, and drying. There will be ample time for experimentation and to explore decorative techniques. Some of these include momigami, shibori, itajime, suminagashi and lace papers. No prior papermaking experience is necessary. Wear rubber boots or other footwear that can get wet, clothes that can get dirty, and bring rubber gloves.

Well, take this class and you won’t be doing either! What you will do is learn twenty-five (count them) different ways to use the concertina format to make books...books that will last much longer and be much more clever than any music they came up with. After learning a lot of variations on the theme, you will be asked to test the musicality of your fingers and produce a series of books using verbal and pictorial matter of your own choice. No previous musical or bookbinding experience needed. Sorry, no dancing allowed in this class! |

| Secret Belgium Bindings | Tuition: $ 225.00 Materials fee: $40.00 |
|
- Workshop Description
- Instructor Information
| | A two-day workshop devoted to making decorated papers and assembling models of this binding. The revival of interest in this binding resulted from Carmencho Arrugui’s study of pre-16th century bindings. Hedi Kyle subsequently developed her own variation and uses a heavy cover paper with paste paper patterns on both sides. Participants will make the Kyle variation and one of the Arrugui variations.
Both books are made without glue. The covers are constructed of heavy weight paper and the text block is sewn directly into the cover using strips cut into one end of the paper. These strips are laced through the spine and folded around to form a decorative pattern of crossing strips of the paper on the spine.

Emily's work most often is with book forms. She has an ongoing interest in the artist's book as a container of content but also as a sculptural object. She likes the complexity that working with books allows, the materials, the forms, the content all working together. There is an interesting relationship between the viewer and the book. A book to be viewed fully must be handled.
Emily will be coming to the Morgan to teach the Secret Belgium Binding as taught to her by Heid Kyle. Emily teaches nationally, is a faculty member for the University of Iowa book arts program, and owner of Naughty Dog Press.
